It is always important to stay safe while on the Internet. Whether you’re banking, playing games, or online shopping, there are a lot of scams and risks. With the holidays and biggest online shopping days of the year here, it’s a good time for a refresher to hear about how to keep yourself safe.
One of the most common ways that attackers try to get your personal information is from impersonating online retailers. Lots of people are shopping online with Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. so these are popular stores for scammers to impersonate when trying to steal your information. You may see emails that claim to be one of many online retailers. They will request that you call them or click on a link to verify your credit card information for your purchase. Then, once you put it in, it sends your personal credit card information directly to the attacker. It’s a scary thought and can look like a legitimate email and a realistic looking link, but there is a great way to stay safe from these scams.
The best way to stay safe from these attacks is to go directly to the retailer’s website (do NOT use the link in their email), log into your online account, and check your order status that way. If you don’t see any issues there, you can also call the support number that is published directly on their website. The key is to make sure that the support number is coming directly from their website, because some scammers will also publish fake support numbers in the Google search results. As long as everything you are checking and calling is from the retailers website, you can feel confident that your information is safe!
